What is RTL
[to jump to RTL combinations, go here]

In 2023, we updated our modular design system and developed a set of ready-to-build building blocks that can be used individually —as stand-alone buildings— or combined together to form larger structures, and even weave together to form streets and neighborhoods. Designed, and engineered to be ready for construction, we dubbed the set RTL or Ready-to-Live; and gave each block an identifier that reflects its traditional precedent:

•Shed (110 sf)
•Cottage (300 sf)
•Barn (600 sf)
•Workroom (650 sf)
•Meeting-House (715 sf)
•Workshop (840 sf)
•Homestead (1350 sf)
•Open Porch/Closed Porch/Bridge (105 sf)

Designed to be flexible and adaptable to your changing needs, they may be scaled up over time to virtually any size. For instance, a starter one-bedroom Cottage may later expand with additions such as a Workroom, a Barn, or even the large Homestead —in time, able to evolve and self-grow into a larger assembly of buildings or a neighborhood.

A proportional system guides the design of each block and its components, ensuring consistency and coherence when multiple blocks are added together.

Ready to Build

We have developed Construction Documents for each block that include structural information, and fixture, finish and equipment specifications. Our design and specification choices reflect our long track record of designing and building superbly crafted homes with a palette of restrained materials and finishes.

To Get Started

You have three options to get started:

• Purchase plans of individual blocks and contract a builder: You can purchase our plans and hire a builder to construct on your site. This option gives you flexibility in customizing the design on your own.

• Work with us to design the combination that matches your goals and, with our assistance, hire a contractor to build on your site.

• Work with one of our partner factories: You can work with one of our partner factories to prefabricate the blocks and deliver and install them on your property. This option is faster and more cost-effective, but it may limit your ability to customize the building. But don’t worry! Our design specifications reflect optimal choices, striking the right balance between efficiency and crisp design.

Whether you purchase our plans or work with our partner factory, we are happy to assist you all along the way until the building is completed and ready for living and use.

Combining the Blocks

RTL blocks may be used individually as stand-alone buildings or combine together to create new forms and house new programs. The examples shown here, illustrate how blocks may be combined to create accessory dwelling units, or homes, or even whole neighborhoods. The possibilities are endless.
