what is nola?

I went to school in New Orleans, LA (NOLA) way before Katrina. It was and remains a city with its own culture, extraordinary music, food and architecture. All that and the sense of pride that New Orleanians always had still remains. What is different now is a sense of optimism, a post-Katrina bounce back that is palbable everywhere in the air.

In the midst of all this Tulane University has emerged as the de facto hub for social entrepeneurship activities related to NOLA. And the school of architecture is now a key player in the rebuilding of the city.

This page started out as a way to track architectural and other happenings related to the rebuilding of NOLA but has expanded its reach beyond.

Comments, suggestions and ideas about NOLA, architecture, art, design and anything in between are welcome.

Grow Dat, a program launched by Tulane, continues to receive accolades.

Grow Dat is a program initiated by Tulane University School of Architecture. It creates an environment for high-school students in New Orleans to participate in growing organic produce and running a farm.

The accessory buildings around the farm are made of shipping containers and were designed into a compelling arrangement by students at Tulane, under the guidance of professor Scott Bernhard and the leadership of Dean Ken Schwartz.

This project is currently under construction and has already received numerous accolades and awards.

We are proud to have been an early supporter of this community oriented program.

Is New Orleans the next hot bed of talent and start-ups?

Exploring New Orleans, Startup by Startup

"New Orleans has always been a hotbed of musical, artistic, and culinary creativity. But the process of rebuilding the city after Katrina and the influx of talent and energy that has stepped up to the challenge has transformed the city into a new kind of hub: for start-ups and social innovation. A new program called NOLAbound is determined to prove that New Orleans is indeed one of the "coolest" places to start a business, as Inc. magazine called it earlier this year."  continue...

Great job Waggonner & Ball Architects. Their solution is to flood New Orleans in a carefull and controlled manner through sculpted water channels, aqueducts and canals. It is the right approach and a good start.
